The Nevada Legislature legalized gambling in an effort to finance public education at a time when the country was experiencing the Great Depression. Construction of nearby Hoover Dam in the 1930s created more than 5,000 jobs and spawned an economic boom in nearby Las Vegas while citizens in other parts of the United States faced long unemployment lines. By the 1940s the first hotels were built on the Strip. Development intensified after World War II.
